Some Holiday Research

A week’s holiday was in order. Hubby and I decided to go sit by a pool in a sunnier climate for a week. The idea was to do nothing and get rid of work-related stress. Only eat, drink and be merry.

Guess twice did I succeed…? Well, a writer’s mind never stops working on the plot of the next novel. Which will be the second part of the Nephilim Quest series. And of course it happens in ancient Egypt (at least half of it does, as the story moves on different time levels). And Amarna is the place of choice in the second book. I admit it – I’m hooked to the New Kingdom period, and the royal house of Amenhotep III and Akhenaten (and yes, Tutanhkamon).

You would expect me to know my facts after studying Egyptology for five years, but it seems the more I read about the period, the more I realize I need to research more. Which is what I spent my holiday doing – reading about Amarna, making detailed notes (notice the little notebook), knowing I have several more books waiting at home on the same subject. Well, as I am the merriest when I can read and write, I had good fun.

And I got an idea for another book completely, not a fantasy novel, and thought the plot through when I wasn’t researching for Nephilim Quest.  Or rather let my mind develop in on its own when I put down the Amarna research for short moments. (The good point about siesta is that you are relaxed and lazy enough to let your mind wander) Explained it all to hubby dearest when we were sitting at a romantic little restaurant. His smile widened as I explained the whole thing and when I finally realized how amused he looked, I asked the famous “What?” question.

Apparently it was fun to watch me talking about ancient Egypt (don’t ever get me started by asking something about the subject or you’ll have a full lecture). He asked when will I start lecturing about Egypt to others. Don’t have the time, I answered – with a full time job and writing and painting I have enough on my plate. Let’s return to the subject if I ever can survive with the income from my writing and can use my days as I please.

Now comes the question of where to get the time to write all those stories… Anyone have any spare time to sell?

Ignorance

Watching the news of the terrorist attacks in Paris, I can only wonder what kind of brain washing it requires to change someone from an ordinary person searching for happiness to someone who willingly murders innocents and think they have the moral right to do so.

Against Ignorance

I can only imagine these people are truly ignorant. They have been fed with stories of hatred, of how the world is against them who are purer than others. Whose god is the right one – and everyone else trying to search for a higher meaning in life is wrong. That is the epitome of ignorance.

I don’t believe in naming the divine with a specific name. I’m sure whatever creative force there is, it doesn’t care one bit about how we choose to name it. Just imagine all the vanished cultures. They also named their gods and goddesses, and those names were forgotten. And yet the world keeps of renewing itself, it did not end when the names of these divinities were no longer chanted in now forgotten languages in temples that have crumbled..

But the ignorance of anyone attacking another with the planned purpose to kill them in the name of hatred is astounding. And the ones who feed this hatred and ignorance are the ones responsible. Too often attackers like those in Paris are kept in emotional isolation by those who pull the strings in the background in the name of religion, when their true motive is gaining power, ruling over other. Being better than others.

No one is better than the next person. And the knowledge of this can only come through learning about the world, its peoples and cultures. And it is today as it has been through history – those who can read, and who are allowed to read whatever they want, are the most educated ones.

Of course the human psychology plays its part – everyone wants to belong to a group that accepts them. Everyone wants to belong. But I very much doubt anyone would want to belong their whole life in a group promoting hatred. If you feel you have been wronged, then yes, for a while a group such as this may give you relief, a way to vent your anger. But surely at some point you begin to feel miserable, and long for more balanced emotions. Of true belonging, acceptance, of love.

Books give knowledge, give the reader a chance to feel emotions safely, teach why others might feel and act the way they do. And eventually they teach us about the humanness of us all. They raise questions, and these push the reader to search for answers. All through their lives.

Because we are never ready. We never find all the answers. The knowledge we were born to learn about ourselves, and that we can only do that when meeting other people who mirror ourselves back to us, should make us curious about other people. To ask questions about their values, and compare those to ours. And make us realise no one has the moral high ground from where they are allowed to shoot down on others simply because they think differently.

The true criminals in this world in my mind are those who prevent others from finding out about all the sides of any given issue. The ones who prevent girls from going to schools, the ones who prevent anyone from reading books they want to read, and forcing them to only read dogmas of hatred.  They do their utmost to prevent the people under their power from developing into balanced human beings through their own search, their own questioning.

And why do they do that? Because of fear. They fear losing their own power over other people. They fear the knowledge they are not better than the others. Their weak self confidence would crumble and they would be forced to meet the scariest thing of all – themselves. Start that journey inwards into their true self, and their connection to everything alive. To learn this connection is about respect. No one can convert the whole world to their view, so attacking others in the name of a certain belief is a lost cause from the very start.

So despite people being killed in terrorist attacks, these ignorant attackers can only be pitied. They have lost their cause through their own actions – they did not impress anyone joining their beliefs, they only increased the resolution of the civilised world to be even stronger in their stand for democracy, for freedom, for equality. And in the end this is what everyone wants. To have a right to speak their opinion openly, to decide about their own lives, and to be respected as an equal to anyone in your society.

This is basic human psychology, and thus anyone trying to prevent this through actions of violence is destined to lose their battle – they are fighting against the very humanness in us all.

Writing Is Reading?

Hmm… I was complaining the other day (oh well, most of the days) that I don’t have time enough to read stories. At the same time I was formatting my story ready for publication. Going through those 180.000 words I thought about my writing process.

And really – I had made plans on how the story would develop. I’m very good at making plans. Just ask my hubby dearest who is shaking his head at all my calendars – both paper- and digital ones. Well you gotta have a calendar where you plan your writing schedule – your work calendar. And then a smaller calendar for the handbag you can dig out to check your everyday events (the handbag in question is actually big enough to accommodate the bigger work calendar as well, but that’s beside the point…)

I learned to plan every day beforehand when I had to write all those essays during my Egyptology studies. When I planned everything in my calendar the first day of the new semester, I always knew what I needed to do each week and day. Lessened stress considerably.

So plans, careful plans, were made to write Nephilim Quest 1: Shadowhunter. Only the story had other plans. It took over. New characters appeared and much to my surprise seemed to have a will of their own. When I really got into the flow of writing, my fingers typed and I just stared at the computer screen, wondering what was being written. It was like I was reading a book while it was being written. And oddly enough when I read the story through, I noticed my subconscious had tied the story nicely together. (Ok, well, nicely… The editing part took over a year)

So who am I to complain I don’t have time enough for novels? I was reading a story while my fingers typed in on the screen. Quite a wonderful experience, really, to see how a story pours out and onto the “paper”.

And now I need to take that work calendar and start planning the next story in the series… I do try to keep up with my plans, but most likely I’ll end up reading a story that writes itself through me. Still –  for a short while I can pretend I have it all planned beforehand, before I start the actual writing again…

The first chapters of Nephiilm Quest Book One: Shadowhunter can be read here.

If you have already read the previous chapters, you can continue with Chapter 2. Kitty Is Gone

“I never read books”

A friend casually mentioned that he never reads books.

Never. Reads. Books.

Ever.

Took me a while to lift my lower jaw from the floor.

Really. Of course it really is none of my business, but even to imagine a life without books…? The knowledge the books can deliver, the feelings they allow you to safely feel, all those adventures you can experience through reading… Not to have any of that?

I’m sorry I cannot even begin to imagine.

Are people these days so used to quick surfing on the net, glancing the headlines and moving on, that they never learn to calm down and immerse into a good story, a wonderful book? They never feel that expansion of the mind a good story gives.

The disturbing thought here is that the people who don’t read books never know what they miss. They have no motive to start reading a book. How to give them that incentive?

Perhaps the knowledge that there are people who are not even interested in reading a book feels all the more disturbing because I write stories myself. I love a good exciting adventure story that flies me off to strange worlds and times, and makes me forget the everyday life, opens up a new reality where I can forget myself.

Well, I suppose all I can do is to keep on writing my  own stories, and hope they reach someone who decides to have a go at reading an actual book.

I put the first chapter of my book Nephilim Quest 1: Shadowhunter here on the blog for you to read. You can do so here. If you like what you read, for a limited time you can get the book for free – I shall post a download link to anyone signing up for this email list, and only ask for a review in return when the book comes out in January 2016.

And finally, the book is ready

I had a plot in my mind for years – one I wanted to write into a book. I started many times, but somehow never got any further than a few chapters. I could not understand why the story would not come out.

On hindsight I understand better. My father had suffered from cancer for years, and when his condition started to worsen, waiting for the inevitable simply stole so much of my creative energies I could not get the story out.

After he passed away, and the funeral was over, it was like floodgates had opened. I was in the process of writing my final essay for my Diploma in Egyptology studies (Middle Kingdom Fortresses in Nubia) and yet, at the same time, I wrote the whole story in four months. 150.000 words. It was like I had tapped to a never-ending energy source.

I then edited the story on my own for eight months (I was in no hurry to publish it). And after the first round of edits I knew I needed a real editor to work on my story – I wanted it to be the best it could be. I found Miriam Bibby, who had studied Egyptology at the University of Manchester as well, and who is a published author (for example her Mistress Meg stories are such a pleasure to read if you like stories set in the Elizabethan age).

She made me restructure the book, correct my writing, introduce some characters earlier into the story (which meant I needed to write more chapters). Miriam did not let me go easy, and I am grateful for that.  I did not perhaps fully realize how important an editor is until Miriam began to work on the story. Wow. Thank you so much, Miriam!

And then came the question of the cover… I had joined ALLi (the Alliance of Independent Authors), and one other member recommended Avalon Graphics to me. I wrote to Cathy Helms, and was impressed at how quick she answered – and delivered three wonderful suggestions for the book cover. Seriously – I could not decide on the cover, and had to ask my husband and Miriam for advice. They both liked this version the best, so here it is. And you bet I’ll have the covers of the other books in the series made by you, Cathy!

I shall publish this as an ebook in January 2016 (Amazon, Smashwords, iBooks, Kobo, Nook…).  And as this is my first published novel, I want to give people a chance to check out my writing before making any decision on buying it. For that purpose I shall be publishing the first chapters in small bits on Wattpad and also here on my blog. Check out the tab that says “Books”, you will find “Nephilim Quest” underneath it and then the chapters.

And here’s a limited time offer: you get this book for free in return for a review on its publication date.

The reason I’m asking for reviews: reader reviews are the lifeblood of any author’s career. For someone writing after a 9-5 job, like myself, getting reviews means I can actually sell a few copies from time to time – which is always a nice bonus 🙂

So every review means a lot to me.

Click the picture below to leave your contact information and I will send you a link to the book in January 2016.

Writer’s Helpers

I came across these photos from the time I was working on my essays as part of my studies for the Certificate in Egyptology at the University of Manchester. (I continued the studies and now hold the Diploma in Egyptology, which took five years of studies that basically dominated my free time so I did not even have time to read novels). Our own apartment was being renovated and we lived for two months in a small one bedroom apartment, which was crammed by some of our furniture, hubby and me, and the three felines who are very much aware of the fact cats were worshipped in ancient Egypt.

I suppose if there is any writer out there with cats, this is a rather familiar experience to them. Kitties seem to be a like little children – if Mommy tries to concentrate on anything else but them, they make it known what the priorities are. Despite the intervention I did manage to finish the essay (it was about the rules of ancient Egyptian two-dimensional tomb art during the Old Kingdom).

writing with rolli

Obviously the rhythmic tapping of my fingers was rather relaxing, as you can see from the second photo…

This still continues if I take a book or my iPad to my hands with the intention of reading or doing research. It seems a book is an invitation to the cat to hop on your lap…

Every place is a good place for reading

Couldn’t resist posting this… We were at our summer cottage (definitely not a luxurious villa, but a place to rest your mind nevertheless, in the middle of the never-ending process of fixing this and that and the other thing…), and as usual, it was time to heat the sauna. I gathered twigs and used these together with some newspaper to get the fire going, then added some firewood. It is so relaxing to watch the flames… And of course – read. At this point the door to the sauna is open, so it is not hot inside yet (only when the water gets warm enough on the stove, it is time to close the door, and after that the sauna is soon ready for bathing.).

So, there I sat in front of the fire, and hubby took a photo of me and my iPad. I was searching for the ebook I am currently reading. The adventures of Master Shardlake (Sovereign, by C.J. Sansom) to be exact.  Normally I have a paperback in my hands at summer cottage – safer to walk in the pier, sea shore and forest with a physical book,  but this time I had downloaded the book to my iPad.

I practiced using  a photo editing app I had downloaded, using this photo, and after a while I realized it looked so… well, funny… that I decided to post it here. To prove that a real bookworm can and will read in the sauna as well 😀 There’s no stopping the serious reader! Come rain or shine, frost or sauna, we just keep on reading…

Reading, reading, reading…

Now that the summer holiday is but a memory, I started thinking what was the best thing about it. Of course, like everyone else, I had plans to do all sorts of thing: write, paint, clean the cupboards and exercise. Well… I did write and draw, but somehow the cleaning of the cupboards didn’t happen quite as planned (I did arrange four shelves in my wardrobe, though, so there!). I blame the sun – after several weeks of rain and cold it suddenly made an appearance. I could not waste all that light and warmth into cleaning, now could I?

So what did I enjoy most? Reading. Long hours of uninterrupted reading… I marched into a bookstore and bought the thickest historical fiction novels I could find. (I like long stories as I read so fast. I often say a short story is lunch, but a loooong story is dinner).

Next time I have a holiday I forget about the plans and just go to the bookstore immediately. The dust bunnies can also have a holiday (not that I would be good at hunting them with the vacuum cleaner anyway) while I enjoy reading, reading, reading…

Immersed in writing

If you also write, you have probably experienced the following:

You look at the time and think that ok, there’s some time you can use for writing before you have to do X (add your own activity which you have planned on doing – cleaning a cupboard, studying, watching something interesting on TV, going for a walk…).

You sit down, open your computer, find your text and begin. Fifteen minutes, that’s all you have. Thirty max, you decide and start typing.

Then the phone rings and you are scared out of your wits. You look at the time and don’t believe it – three hours have passed.
I love those moments – being so immersed into doing something you love that you forget the time. That’s life at its best.

Seven Things About My Writing

Miriam Bibby tagged me on Facebook to discuss 7 things about my writing. I figured I might post my reply here on my blog as well, with some editing done.

Embed from Getty Images

1.  Not many know but I have written stories since I was… Well, when the dinosaurs roamed the earth. Fairy stories as a child, and fantasy when I was older. None of those stories have been officially published. Though I did win some school writing contests. I don’t remember the subject of this one competition any more, but the best price was a trip to Hunnebostrand near Göteborg in Sweden. I still remember those roses climbing in the gardens, and the wonderful sea and islands. Not even Liseberg’s amusement part could compare to the sea… (I’ve always loved nature, and the sea especially)

2.  For the past five years I’ve mainly written Egyptology essays – first when I studied for the Certificate in Egyptology and then for the Diploma in Egyptology (University of Manchester). I really enjoyed that – loved all the research involved, and my only problem was that I could never fit in my essays all the information I had gathered. Still – pruning your original draft into half of its size sure teaches you not to fall in love with your own words. A very useful skill to any writer.

3.  I learned the hard way to first just write a story through, and not stop to polish my style until the first draft of a story is written. I used to fall to the same trap over and over again, and found myself making the old mistake of beginning to correct my style before the whole story was done. And that way the story never finishes.  The editing only comes afterward. (And trust me – that is much harder than the actual writing)

4.  Oh, sorry. Sure I have published something, kinda sorta. I put up a website http://www.inspirational-short-stories.com a few years back, before starting my studies at the University of Manchester. There I put some of my stories. I am now in the process of pruning those – the site was sorely neglected because of my Egyptology studies. And after five years I look at what I write with completely new eyes… Some of the pages will definitely end up in garbage…  But oddly enough I seem to have quite a following in India… Strange… But I like the people and colorful culture of India, so that is quite nice actually.

5. And yes, you could read Mr. Mummific’s opinions about our modern life from an ancient Egyptian perspective as short stories, I suppose. You find him at http://www.ancientegypt101.com  – do have a peek but don’t take him too seriously… He has his dry tongue firmly in cheek. (If you only want Egyptology facts, then skip Mummific and go only to the facts-pages) At the moment we are slowly going through the pharaohs and queens of Egypt in chronological order, and I throw in other pages about other aspects of ancient Egypt as well, when I have the time. (If someone has time to sell, do tell…)

6.  I love historical novels and fantasy, and love to write that too. So that would be my genre for sure, if I publish my writings in real novel format. Needs diligent research, though, and there is always the fear you get some detail wrong, but I try to get my facts right.

7. Shall I publish fiction, then? Have I written something “serious”? I leave you in suspense… But to give you a hint: Miriam A. Bibby is an excellent editor! (Something a non-native speaker of English definitely needs.) Just don’t your steal her from me, you aspiring writers – she is my “Precious”. (Yes, Lord of the Rings was my definite number 1 read when I was young). If you want to be impressed by her wonderful writing, check http://amzn.to/18xdUBC
