Thought for the day

Anxiety

“Anxiety is a thin stream of fear trickling through the mind. If encouraged, it cuts a channel into which all other thoughts are drained.”

― Arthur Roche

This is so true. Often we have one thing to worry about and a dozen that are going well. And what do we do? We concentrate of thinking about the worrisome thing, and eventually it is all we see. All the good things in life vanish from our minds because our mind can only concentrate on one thing at a time. And a thought we keep thinking tends to turn into what we perceive as truth. Suddenly that one worrisome thing has turned our whole world into a its likeness. Nothing feels good anymore. And getting out of that spiral of negative feelings takes some doing… So do yourself a favour and concentrate on the good things too. Take the habit of writing done one good thing that happened in your day. Every day. Use a notebook, your calendar, your mobile phone. Anything. Just write it down. And read later what you have written. You’d be surprised to see how many wonderful, joyful things you have in your life. It’s just a question of learning to notice them.

Happiness Is Cherry Blossoms

I thought maybe people would like to see some drawings for a change. So I created this little happy character. As you may have noticed from my previous emails, spring has arrived here and I especially like the beauty of cherry trees in full bloom. So no surprise they made it into this little picture as well 🙂

Strawberries on the beach

We went to the seaside for a picnic today – the first really warm spring day, and we could safely sit on the beach, alone. Sitting in the warm sun. listening to the waves and eating sushi and strawberries… Definitely something to write about in my Happiness Journal.

What made you happy today? Send a note and tell, if you wish to share your little happy moment with others.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Water Under the Bridge

“A boy, long time ago, leaned against the railing of a bridge and watched the current of the river below. A log, a bit of driftwood, a chip floated past. Again the surface of the river was smooth. But always, as it had for a hundred, perhaps a thousand, perhaps a million years, the water slipped by, under the bridge. Sometimes the current went more swiftly, and again quite slowly. But always the river flowed on under the bridge.

Watching the river that day the boy made a discovery. It was not the discovery of a material thing, something he might put his hand upon. He could not even see it. He had discovered an idea. Quite suddenly, yet quietly, he knew that everything in his life would someday pass under the bridge and be gone, like water. And the boy came to like those words “under the bridge”. All his life thereafter the idea served him well and carried him through, although there were days and ways that were dark and not easy. Always, when he had made a mistake that couldn’t be helped, or lost something that would never come again, the boy, now a man, said, “It’s water under the bridge.” And he didn’t worry unduly about the mistakes after that and he certainly didn’t let them get him down – because it was “water under the bridge”. “

– N.V. Peale

Picture of the day

Because of the thought for today, this picture was the only logical choice.

This little bridge is quite near where we live, and we often walk in the woods and cross the little stream using this bridge.

Perhaps you could write down the things floating in your river on the left hand side of the notebook, and then later on the right hand side what good came out of it?

Daily Funny / A joke to the boss

My boss texted me: “I could use a little cheering up and they told me you know good jokes. Send me one.”

I texted back: “I’m busy working, I’ll send a joke later.”

To which he answered: “That was funny. Send me another one!”

80’s music
We went for a drive around a nearby island, and listened to a radio station that only played music from the 80’s. Gosh that was fun! And of course I was hollering along. So fun to remember all those songs, even though I had not heard them in years. For a while I did not think of the corona pandemic at all.

Do you have a happiness you would like to share?

Thought for the day

What do we really see in others? We think we can quickly see the faults of another person. The interesting this is that these are often the same ones we don’t notice in ourselves. An annoying habit or trait in another person is often something we cannot tolerate in ourselves.
The next time you notice someone is annoying, look into yourself. Are you perhaps mirroring something in yourself to other people so you could give words and structure to that characteristic? If so, what does this teach you?

Happy Journals

This is a quick sketch I made some years ago. Obviously, as I love books, this is about loving reading (and writing) them. But this picture can also represent the Happiness Journals I have written along the way. Notebooks, side notes in diaries, little sticky notes…

Daily Funny

One day I saw a mother and her little son (about 3 years of age) at a local mall. The mother was pointing at a big flowerpot. “Look! Can you see that?” she asked. I could see what she was pointing –  a little spider was weaving a net between two leaves. The little boy looked, clapped his hands and yelled: “Spiderman!”

Thought for the day:

Do you hurry forward, living the “once-then”-life?

Once you get something, then you will be happy… And when you get it you notice you are happy for a while, and suddenly new things to want come to your mind. You are not forever happy after having achieved the wanted thing after all. You see many things around you you once wanted, and now you barely pay attention to anymore. I love the saying that happiness is not a destination, it is the journey. Concentrate on your daily journey and look at the little beautiful things around you.

About me

Author, Egyptologist, Artist…I
have been writing even before I could write. Sort of. My first story was a horse cartoon I drew  after meeting a police horse. I was three years old at the time and not knowing the alphabet yet used pictures to tell my stories. Today I have published several books and you can find my website at www.leenasbooks.com

I love painting, photographing, writing, ancient Egypt (doing my MA at the University of Manchester at the moment), animals, nature, reading, walking, going to the gym…I have been writing positive quotes and done happiness journaling since I was in my twenties (after paying attention to the negative self talk in my mind). It is easy to slip back to old negative thinking, so I have to admit I have a bit of a selfish motivation to write these little Happiness Journal emails. It keeps me concentrating on the good things in life too.I’ll be posting quotes, photos, drawings and bits and pieces of writer’s life.

Photo of the day

A little yellow flowerI saw this little flower on the side of a road on the last hot summer day – clouds were gathering and you could feel the rain approaching.  The flower reminded me of the way life sometimes feels like – a rocky patch, grey and hard to walk through. And then, suddenly, a little joyful thing surprises you, reminding that not everything is grey and difficult.

Daily Quote

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And Heaven in a Wild Flower
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.

– William Blake (Auguries of Innocence)
