The First 13 Chapters
After almost two years of writing and editing my book will come out at the end of January 2016. It is the beginning of a fantasy books series and yes – the story moves in ancient Egypt (as well as modern times and ancient Greece). The characters are based on human mythology.
You can read the first 13 chapters of Nephilim Quest 1: Shadowhunter on my blog HERE.
(I shall be publishing the first 25 chapters of the book on my blog.)
Start with the link at the end of the page saying Whispers
If you’d like to read the whole book for free, the information is at the end of each chapter what to do. Very easy.
This pile of papers…

Is now transformed into this:
Ignorance
Watching the news of the terrorist attacks in Paris, I can only wonder what kind of brain washing it requires to change someone from an ordinary person searching for happiness to someone who willingly murders innocents and think they have the moral right to do so.

I can only imagine these people are truly ignorant. They have been fed with stories of hatred, of how the world is against them who are purer than others. Whose god is the right one – and everyone else trying to search for a higher meaning in life is wrong. That is the epitome of ignorance.
I don’t believe in naming the divine with a specific name. I’m sure whatever creative force there is, it doesn’t care one bit about how we choose to name it. Just imagine all the vanished cultures. They also named their gods and goddesses, and those names were forgotten. And yet the world keeps of renewing itself, it did not end when the names of these divinities were no longer chanted in now forgotten languages in temples that have crumbled..
But the ignorance of anyone attacking another with the planned purpose to kill them in the name of hatred is astounding. And the ones who feed this hatred and ignorance are the ones responsible. Too often attackers like those in Paris are kept in emotional isolation by those who pull the strings in the background in the name of religion, when their true motive is gaining power, ruling over other. Being better than others.
No one is better than the next person. And the knowledge of this can only come through learning about the world, its peoples and cultures. And it is today as it has been through history – those who can read, and who are allowed to read whatever they want, are the most educated ones.
Of course the human psychology plays its part – everyone wants to belong to a group that accepts them. Everyone wants to belong. But I very much doubt anyone would want to belong their whole life in a group promoting hatred. If you feel you have been wronged, then yes, for a while a group such as this may give you relief, a way to vent your anger. But surely at some point you begin to feel miserable, and long for more balanced emotions. Of true belonging, acceptance, of love.
Books give knowledge, give the reader a chance to feel emotions safely, teach why others might feel and act the way they do. And eventually they teach us about the humanness of us all. They raise questions, and these push the reader to search for answers. All through their lives.
Because we are never ready. We never find all the answers. The knowledge we were born to learn about ourselves, and that we can only do that when meeting other people who mirror ourselves back to us, should make us curious about other people. To ask questions about their values, and compare those to ours. And make us realise no one has the moral high ground from where they are allowed to shoot down on others simply because they think differently.
The true criminals in this world in my mind are those who prevent others from finding out about all the sides of any given issue. The ones who prevent girls from going to schools, the ones who prevent anyone from reading books they want to read, and forcing them to only read dogmas of hatred. They do their utmost to prevent the people under their power from developing into balanced human beings through their own search, their own questioning.
And why do they do that? Because of fear. They fear losing their own power over other people. They fear the knowledge they are not better than the others. Their weak self confidence would crumble and they would be forced to meet the scariest thing of all – themselves. Start that journey inwards into their true self, and their connection to everything alive. To learn this connection is about respect. No one can convert the whole world to their view, so attacking others in the name of a certain belief is a lost cause from the very start.
So despite people being killed in terrorist attacks, these ignorant attackers can only be pitied. They have lost their cause through their own actions – they did not impress anyone joining their beliefs, they only increased the resolution of the civilised world to be even stronger in their stand for democracy, for freedom, for equality. And in the end this is what everyone wants. To have a right to speak their opinion openly, to decide about their own lives, and to be respected as an equal to anyone in your society.
This is basic human psychology, and thus anyone trying to prevent this through actions of violence is destined to lose their battle – they are fighting against the very humanness in us all.
“I never read books”
A friend casually mentioned that he never reads books.
Never. Reads. Books.
Ever.
Took me a while to lift my lower jaw from the floor.
Embed from Getty ImagesReally. Of course it really is none of my business, but even to imagine a life without books…? The knowledge the books can deliver, the feelings they allow you to safely feel, all those adventures you can experience through reading… Not to have any of that?
I’m sorry I cannot even begin to imagine.
Are people these days so used to quick surfing on the net, glancing the headlines and moving on, that they never learn to calm down and immerse into a good story, a wonderful book? They never feel that expansion of the mind a good story gives.
The disturbing thought here is that the people who don’t read books never know what they miss. They have no motive to start reading a book. How to give them that incentive?
Perhaps the knowledge that there are people who are not even interested in reading a book feels all the more disturbing because I write stories myself. I love a good exciting adventure story that flies me off to strange worlds and times, and makes me forget the everyday life, opens up a new reality where I can forget myself.
Well, I suppose all I can do is to keep on writing my own stories, and hope they reach someone who decides to have a go at reading an actual book.
I put the first chapter of my book Nephilim Quest 1: Shadowhunter here on the blog for you to read. You can do so here. If you like what you read, for a limited time you can get the book for free – I shall post a download link to anyone signing up for this email list, and only ask for a review in return when the book comes out in January 2016.
The Day of the Book and the Rose
Today, the 23rd of April, is the day of the book and the rose.
Embed from Getty Images23rd of April 1616 was the date of the death of two famous authors – namely WIlliam Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes.
Originally the 23rd of April was the date when the Roses Fair was celebrated already in the 15th Century. The legend says that it was to commemorate St. George slaying a dragon to rescue a maiden. A drop of the dragon’s blood turned into a rose.
In 1926 Spain decided to establish this day as the Day of the Book for the reason Miguel de Cervantes, the author of Don Quijote, died that day (according to the Gregorian calendar). The English of course had already been remembering the death of Shakespeare on that day for some time (according the Julian calendar).
In November 1995, UNESCO declared the day the International Day of Book and Copyright. It was stated that books had been the most powerful tool throughout history to spread knowledge.
The custom of the day is that men give women a rose, and women give men a book. Now I wouldn’t mind the tradition being the other way around, but I am sure my book shelves would complain. I already have books in two rows on the said furniture…
It is wonderful there is a day dedicated to the book. The ability to read is one of the greatest skills human kind has. It has the power to expand our minds, to learn interesting stories, to learn about our universe. The ability to read also disperses ignorance – which is why some cultures would like to keep a significant part of their populatio illiterate. The ignorant are easier to control.
Still, I can never cease to wonder how any country can afford not to use the brain capacity of all of their population. Allowing all children, regardless of gender, to learn to read and write, would pay great dividends in the future. It would also promote democracy, which seems to be a thing to be feared by many in powerful positions.
In the words of Malala Yousafzai: “Education is the power terrorists fear most.”
Why don’t we make every day the Day of the Book, and of Education?
I loved reading and books ever since I learned to read on my own as a child. I remember sitting on the floor of the kindergarten, with a book about animals open on my lap. I tried to repeat the letters as well as I could remember them. On our way back home that day I looked out of the window of the bus, pointed at the sign of a local bank, and told my mother what it said. And that is how I learned to read.
The local library (and a library bus before that) became my second home. I tottered home carrying such high piles of books I could not see over them. I read a book a day (they were children’s books but still). Whenever we visited anywhere, I immediately navigated to the bookshelf and started searching for something to read. Usually I found a book I liked, and withdrew into some cozy corner with my treasure.
I also started writing stories as soon as I learned to write. And illustrated them as well – I started drawing and painting when I was three. These days I am also an artist.
Here I will write about books, reading, and maybe find tips for writers as well. I wish to connect with people who know nothing better than a good book.
