The World’s Top Bookstores I

Hmmm… When I become rich I think I’ll plan a round-the-world trip according to the best Egyptological museums and unique bookstores…

images (4)There are so many wonderful and unique bookstores all over the world and I want to showcase the most amazing. It was hard to keep this to a reasonable list, so this is Part 1 of 2. Also, I focused on uniqueness, intrigue, and wow factors.

Here are my picks for the Top Bookstores in the World:

(Portland, OR)

Powell’s is legendary;
The City of Books (headquarters) takes up an entire city block;
it has 68,000 square feet, nine (color-coded) rooms, three floors, and 3,500 sections. This Flagship location is the world’s largest used book store (carrying new and used, over 1 million books) and said to be the largest independent chain of bookstores on the planet.

They even provide a map for navigating the “city.” It is an amazing store, and one of my favorite places. I am a Portland local and adore this store, but although I am…

200 ways to say “says”

Ahh… I was just writing Nephilim Quest 2 Amarna yesterday, and noticed how many times I used the word “say” (first draft). When I was cleaning up NQ1, I searched for every “say” “said” “says” and did my best to invest a better way to… erm… say it? Ok, better way to express speaking.

Book Door Lookbook

Just wondering how the books won’t fall off when opening these doors… But I definitely like the idea!

Abbie Lu's avatarCafe Book Bean

There are so many creative way to display books, but of all of them hidden bookshelf doors are my favorite! I have a small home so I can really appreciate any idea that saves space, and adds a little quirky
fun design to a house.

Here are some great book doors. This first one gives me all kinds of ideas.

book-case-door-after-iiI think this is such a great idea, what an awesome way to utilize all the space in your home. If it was me, inside that door would be a cozy little book nook getaway!chestnut-hill-02I am such a fan of the sliding hidden shelves! Not only does it save space but it is also a bit of fun I think. double-bookcase-door-600This one may be my favorite (design wise,) but I’m not sure, they are all so lovely. I think this one is a bit more obvious then the others though…

8 Science Backed Reasons to Read ‘Paper’ Book Instead of an eBook

Ok, ok… I know I should get Nephilim Quest into print already. I am going to do so soon…

Although more and more people own e-books, it seems safe to say that real books aren’t going anywhere yet. Eighty-eight percent of the Americans alone who read e-books continue to read printed ones as well. And while we’re all for the convenience of digital downloads and a lighter load, we can’t bring ourselves to part with the joy of a good, old-fashioned read. There’s […]

Interview of Cathy Helms of Avalon Graphics

So there I was, with a novel in my hands. Two years of writing and editing, and I realised I needed a good book cover.

I knew I could not create a professional looking book cover on my own. if you write a book, it has about one second to catch the attention of a reader in a row on thumb-nail size book covers on a web page. It has to be good. What I needed was a professional book cover designer.

I asked recommendations on ALLi’s Facebook group, and got several names. I spent days on going through everything I could find on their websites, and it was Avalon Graphics that appealed to me most. So I wrote to them, and got a fast and professional answer. It felt like I had found the right designer for my book.

I was right. Cathy Helms was fast, professional, and a real artist. I was definitely in the hands of a professional book cover designer.

I was so impressed at the work of Cathy Helms of Avalon Graphics, that I asked if Cathy would be kind enough to answer a few questions about her work. She kindly agreed, and I created a page for her in my interview series.

If you are an author searching for a good book cover designer, I can recommend Cathy. Good work ethics, amazingly fast, always answering my emails… I suppose that is what is defined as “good customer experience”.

These libraries certainly make you think again what a library should look like… In my mind a library is old, full of books and nooks… Some of these libraries certainly don’t fit that bill!
