Study Shows Dip in Prominence of Female Characters in Novels
Metropolitan Museum Image and Data Resources (Gilman Collection, Purchase, Harriette and Noel Levine Gift, 2005)
A study recently published in the Journal of Cultural Analytics shows that the prominence of female characters in novels and the number of female novelists declined between 1800 and 1960. Male authors were “remarkably resistant to giving women more than a third of the character-space in their stories,” according to the researchers.

Book Review – ‘Nefertiti’s Face: The Creation of an Icon’ by Joyce Tyldesley
Egypt at the Manchester Museum
Joyce Tyldesley’s new book concerns Ancient Egypt’s most well-known poster-girl: Nefertiti, or – more accurately – a painted limestone and plaster bust of her now in the Neues Museum in Berlin. Tyldesley has already written an excellent biography of the lady herself, and uses this opportunity to discuss her most famous representation – and how it skews our entire impression of who she was. The book follows the successful format of the biography of a single object adopted by Laurence Berman, curator at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in his accessible study of the Late Period ‘Boston Green Head’. As a fellow curator, the idea of spending a whole book on a sole museum object is particularly appealing to me.
Now, I must confess personal bias here – Joyce is a friend and University of Manchester colleague, and we have discussed the content of the book extensively. Yet…

One Travel Destination to Rule Them All
I want to go here one day… 🙂
Hobbiton in Matamata New Zealand may very well be one of the most magical places on earth. It was the real set for the Lord of the Ring movies–perfectly perched in the unique farmland hills of the north island. The attention to detail is unreal–you can’t help but get butterflies in your stomach as you wander around.
At the end of the tour, you get to have a drink (and maybe a meat pie) and The Green Dragon Inn. Good George, a local brewing company, came up with the different varieties they offer there.
As you make your drive to and from this amazing destination, keep your eyes peeled. It’s one heck of a beautiful drive, and it doesn’t hurt to blast the LOTR soundtrack on your adventure. It also doesn’t hurt to mask your excitement from the locals a bit. Most of them are over the craze to visit…

The Bio Bank reaches 1000 mummies!
Ancient Egyptian Animal Bio Bank
Well, here we are at the start of a new year. The AHRC grant is now entering the second half of its first year so I thought it would be good to update you on what’s been going on since July. I am working through the existing Bio Bank data to identify artefacts which fit my research questions – all those which don’t contain complete animal remains of one individual (approximately half of my data set). As is often the way when dealing with museum collections, information regarding the artefacts can be incomplete, so there is an element of research required simply to get the records up-to-date. From this point, begins a process of statistical analysis to establish whether there are any noticeable trends within the data which might shed light on the ancient practice of animal mummification. Early indications suggest that there might well be, but more of that…

Tutankhamon-book I wrote will travel the world with the Tutankhamon exhibition
And the secret is out The Tutankhamon book I wrote and illustrated for children gets to travel the world with Tutankhamon’s artifacts on their world tour of ten cities around the world. Had to pinch myself when I heard this. (Ok, maybe I’ll pinch myself a few more times…)
I quote Nigel Fletcher-Jones’s post on Facebook (director of the American University in Cairo Press)
“I’m delighted to say that both Dominique Navarro and Leena Pekkalainen will have AUC Press books for sale at the exhibition stores as the exhibit travels around the world on its ten city tour. More soon!”
